From War to Success:
How I Built a Corporation in Canada with Three Young Children
In 2022, my family was forced to leave our home in Ukraine due to war. We arrived in Canada with three young children, no connections, no stable income, and no support—but with a strong desire to build a new life.
The First Steps: Starting with $122
The idea of starting my own business came naturally—I wanted to share a piece of Ukrainian tradition through pierogies. With only $122 as my initial capital, I rented a shelf in an ice cream shop and began selling my first batches of products. Canadians immediately loved the natural ingredients, traditional taste, and ease of preparation. Positive feedback and features in local media helped me quickly expand production.
Business Growth: From a Small Kitchen to a Corporation
In 2023, I officially registered my corporation, “Ukrainian Pierogies Inc.”, which was a major step in scaling the business. That same year, I opened the cafe “Alla’s Ukrainian Pierogies & More” 83 Frank st. Strathroy, where we began serving not only frozen pierogies but also freshly prepared Ukrainian dishes. 2024 I opened restaurant 86 Frank st., Strathroy Downtown Ontario Canada.
My products are available in Ricco cash & carry stores, supermarkets, and markets in London, Woodstock, Mount Brydges and Ilderton.
We are proud to have a 5-star rating on Google, which reflects our commitment to quality, great service, and the passion we put into our work.
Community Support and Cultural Mission
My business is not just about pierogies—it’s about supporting the community and preserving Ukrainian traditions. I actively volunteer with the Royal Canadian Legion, Rotary Club, and municipal events while also supporting local initiatives. I also host pierogies - making workshops in schools, churches, and senior homes, introducing Canadians to the rich cultural and culinary heritage of Ukraine.
Through my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to speak at presentations and forums, including the University Western Ontario. Huron University has studied Ukrainian Pierogies INC as a university business case. This not only highlights the uniqueness of Alla’s but also inspires students and entrepreneurs to provide motivation with future endeavours.

What people are saying...
I just visited Alla’s Ukrainian Pierogies & More in Strathroy, ON. This place is a real hidden gem. They serve authentic, home made Ukrainian food for eat-in or take-out. The food was delicious, my server, Anastasia was excellent; she was prompt, courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable. The restaurant was absolutely spotless, so clean you could eat off the floors. They quite obviously take pride in what they do.
I had a cappuccino with a bacon and cabbage hand pie, as well as an apple and sour cream hand pie. Everything was delicious. I got some Ukrainian cabbage rolls and borscht to take home for dinner, which I anticipate will be every bit as good as the cappuccino and hand pies I enjoyed in the restaurant.
If you are looking for a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Alla’s Ukrainian Pierogies & More is a fantastic place to visit, for eat-in or take-out. It will be my new go-to restaurant in Strathroy.
Quick update: I took the borscht and Ukrainian cabbage rolls home and gave them a try. They were even better than I expected, and my expectations were high. The food they serve at Alla’s is exceptionally good, I can’t recommend it highly enough…. Paul Tauschek
